This popular destination offers a wide variety of field trip opportunities. The field trip features the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher and the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship. A great fit for fourth grade and fifth grade groups!

North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Take a self-guided tour and see over 2,500 sea creatures including sharks, alligators, baby sea turtles, horseshoe crabs, moray eels, and stingrays. Staff-lead programs are also available. 

USS North Carolina Battleship

Tour the most famous and the most decorated World War II Battleship.

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

Have a picnic lunch then explore the beach access for shell collecting and games. Ask about the park ranger turtle program!

Carolina Ocean Studies Programs

Island and Sound Exploration - Take a ferry to Masonboro Island for a three hour hands- on program. Activities include crabbing, investigating the life found in a salt marsh, and exploring one of the best shelling beaches in our state. 

Pier into the Ocean Program - Fish, search for fossils, hunt for mole crabs, and do hands-on food web studies at the historic Kure Beach Pier. 

Estuary Program - Students explore different aquatic systems as well as discovering the region's Civil War and lighthouse history. 

Dinner and Dance Cruise

Cruise down the Cape Fear River on the Royal Princess Party Boat for an evening of dining and dancing.

Fort Fisher Historic Civil War Park 

A confederate fort during the American Civil War. Ranger-led academic programs are geared towards your grade level curriculum. 

 

UNCW Tour/Dining Hall 

Take a guided campus tour of University of North Carolina Wilmington then eat in the Wagoner Dining Hall.

Fort Caswell

​Experience a hands-on, staff-led program at this former U.S. military fortress. Based on the group size, students are divided into smaller groups and rotate through four or six educational stations with an emphasis on marine science and NC history. The stations are located on the beach, in the marsh, in the fort, and/or at the Cape Fear Education Building.
