Looking for a trip that brings early American history to life? A 2 day Williamsburg field trip is an exciting journey that includes Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. It's the perfect way for students to step directly into the stories they read about in class. This itinerary blends hands-on history, interactive learning, and a little evening fun to keep your group engaged from start to finish.
Day 1 – Jamestown & Yorktown
Start your adventure at Jamestown Settlement, where students explore re-creations of James Fort and a Powhatan Indian village, step aboard full-size replicas of the 1607 ships, and meet costumed interpreters who make 17th-century life come alive.
After lunch, travel down the scenic Colonial Parkway to the Yorktown Victory Center, where the Revolutionary War comes into focus. Students will walk through indoor galleries and outdoor living history exhibits, including a recreated Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm. The day wraps up with hotel check-in, dinner, and an evening Colonial Hauntings Ghost Tour—always a student favorite!
Day 2 – Colonial Williamsburg
Spend the morning on a guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg, the nation’s largest living history museum. With costumed interpreters leading the way, students explore government buildings, trade shops, the Capitol, and the Governor’s Palace while learning about the debates that shaped our nation’s democracy.
After a picnic lunch, groups can enjoy self-guided exploration of the Governor’s Palace gardens, shopping at Merchant’s Square, and wandering the historic streets before heading home.
Teacher Planning Tips
📌 Prep your groups in advance: Each site provides guides, so splitting into smaller groups will make the experience smoother and more interactive.
📌 Remind families about outdoor settings: Most attractions are outdoors, so students should dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes.
📌 Budget for souvenirs: Every site has a gift shop—remind students to bring cash or card if they want a keepsake.
📌 Don’t forget the fun factor: The evening ghost tour is a highlight for students and a great way to balance the educational experiences with something they’ll rave about afterward.
This 2 day Williamsburg field trip blends history, culture, and hands-on fun. It’s the kind of experience that helps students not only understand history but feel like they’ve stepped right into it.
